What are some good resources for an author working on their first book?

Someone suggested the book A Writer's Book of Days: A Spirited Companion and Lively Muse for the Writing Life by Judy Reeves, because I tend to suffer with writer's block frequently. I've been working on the same book for a long time now and I just keep reading over it and deleting 2/3 of the book and re-writing it. My whole toe nail is falling off!?!?

So, i noticed my softball cleats were getting small on me. I kept telling myself I would get new ones but before I knew it the season was over. I noticed during the season that toe started hurting and then my big toe nail become bruised. I knew it was because of the shoes. Then it started oozing brown stuff (it looked like blood, sorry don't mean to gross anyone out) After that it turned greenish. It started becoming detached slowly. Today it is almost completely off. Though age should not matter, many agents will reject your work if they find out you are under 18 because of legal responsibilities, as I understand. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't send your stuff in though. Some publishers, if they are willing enough, can come up with a special contract that you and your parents sign together...at least, that's how it worked with me, because I was a minor at the time when I signed my contract, even though by the time I finish the book, I won't be. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to approach an agent about age. I never sent my things to an agent. Someone found my stuff online and contacted me about it. They asked if I would be interested in having my work published through their company, and when I replied, I said that I was, mentioned that I was only 17 or 16 and asked if that would be a problem for them. I have not heard of publishers taking advantage of younger authors, but I doubt they would because of the trouble it could bring. And no, having it on a website does not make it untouchable. That's how my work got noticed. You do, however, want to be cautious just where online you put your work. www.worthyofpublishing.com is where I had my stuff, and in my opinion, they seem to have good copyright policies. As far as length goes, I don't think there is a specific one you should limit yourself to. Think about the different books you've seen. Some crime novels are about 200 pages, while harry potter books may be about 400. I wouldn't worry too much about that, really. I don't know about writing a query. I never dreamed of sending my book to a publisher because I'm a perfectionist and never thought it would be good enough. And yes, if two publishers accept, it is up to you to choose which you want or which offer is better etc. I'm not quite sure I follow you on the "author purpose" thing. I have many goals as a writer, and many more with individual stories that i feel are my "purpose". Anyhow, if you need a fresh pair of eyes and you're worried about the whole internet thing, feel free to shoot me an e-mail of whatever excerpt you have that you feel is in need. I'm a little tied up right now with finishing my own novel, but I'd be glad to set it aside for a little bit if a fellow writer is in need. I need some feedback for a very short story?

I like it. When you first read the first couple of sentences you immediately assume that the narrator is the one being attacked, but as you read on you find that he/she is infact the attacker. Except for a couple of minor grammatical and spelling errors, it is good. One thing though, the word 'hop' used near the end gives me a mental image of a bunny... Im not sure this is the mental picture you want for a fearsome predator... Just saying

I would bring a bat, even if you don't think you're going to have to hit. If you do need to hit you could always borrow someone else's bat but the coaches might think of you as unprepared or who doesn't care enough. Even as a pitcher they may want you to hit though, just in case they ever do need you to play a position for some reason.

5'11" and 110 pounds?

I'm a male and 22 years old. I have tried everything to gain weight and nothing has seemed to work. I have never eaten properly since I was a child only eating one small meal a day sometimes nothing just depends. My eating problem has progressed so far that I even forget to eat, my stomache won't growl,I don't feel any fatigue whatsoever so it just slips my mind after a hard days work. My doctor has tried his best by giving me anti-depressant medications to make me hungry but to no avail. If i eat more than once in a day I feel terribly sick, I don't throw it up or anything but i'll writhe in pain from severe abdominal pains and cramps for hours. I do have celiacs so i'm used to the cramping from that and its not the same. Everyone just tells me "well start eating" its gotten to a point where my family and friends are agitated and hostile towards me thinking I can just magically change but its far from that easy. I work in an acute care hospital and have been doing in home nursing care for years as well so I am well aware of the effects it can have on my body. I need help. What is a good method to help me get to a more normal weight? An excercise of stretching my stomache maybe? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

It's not that he's a bad writer, but I felt like he didn't put in any effort. The poem was really sloppily done compared to other writing he's done before. Should I tell him, or just be satisfied with it?

What do I do about chronic back pain that doctors refuse to take seriously?

Ever since I was 14 (I'm 19 now) I've had horrible pains in my lower back. I don't know of it's nerves or muscles or what but it's a sharp jabbing pain that radiates down my legs to knees and up my back and torso to my chest. I've gone to numerous doctors about it, they've taken x-rays, but can't find what's wrong. Since they can't find what's wrong, they seem to think it's no big deal and I'm just exaggerating the pain. Over the years the pain has grown more intense and frequent and I've grown tolerant to the prescription pain pills they've been giving me, which include Naproxen, Skelaxin, and Hydrocodone. They only gave me Hydrocodone once last year when I went to the emergency room because of the unbearable pain. Since then, however, doctors refuse to give me any "real" pain medications (Vicodin, Oxycontin, Percocet, etc.) because they still have yet to find what's wrong with me. They aren't trying, though, and their idea of figuring it out is just doing x-rays over and over knowing it's going to be the same damn thing it was the first 5 times. They're doing nothing to help cure the pain and refuse to give me pills to ease the pain. It's so bad now that I can hardly sleep at night, I wake up every night writhing in pain, I miss class all the time because hte pain is so intense that any movement cause it to shoot and radiate all over my body, I can't run, work out, play sports, or do anything I used to do anymore, yet the still act like I'm just overreacting. I've seen 4 different doctors about it. They're too stupid to figure out what's wrong so they just assume I'm faking it and trying to get pills. How can I be taken seriously? I've been having to borrow pills from my brother and other friends because of the doctor's reluctance to prescribe me any.

American Idol ... WTF!?

I think mainly because young preteen and teenage girls (11-13ish) watch it and usually girls don't vote for girls. This happened last year two (only this year we are down to two girls much earlier). Are there any mangas where the main character really does get raped?

Okay, I'm not looking for a adult-themed or fetishy type of thing. I like shojo romances, but I am so tired of all of them going, "omg, i'm gonna get raped" and then nothing happens. It's like, every single shojo does this. The only mangas where the character got raped was Gravitation. Haou Airen did this, but it got really disturbing cause the writer basically played out all her fantasies (though as a hentai..). Anyway, I'm looking for a romance, I don't care if it's shounen, shojo, gender bender, josei, seinen, yaoi/yuri, or whatever, as long as the writer doesn't just constantly flirt with the idea of rape (I'm looking at you Boy Over Flowers and Ceres) and actually makes it happen, like in Gravitation. The scene doesn't have to be graphic or anything, but in Gravitation and Fushigi Yugi (hey, she thought she had been, so it counts) where it opened up a new psychological themes or changed relationships. And I don't want a Haou Airen or Please Choose Me, where it's like, "you did something horrible, but I still love you for no particular reason" and that's the end. I guess something more real, which may be impossible from a manga >.>

My guess is a traumatic experience in where the innocence of your childhood is gone. Maybe a loved one from your childhood died, a recent pregnancy, or even a big move. Something happened that made your subconscious start grieving your childhood. The best thing that you could do is grieve consciously, look at old photographs, talk to friends, maybe even cry a little, and then let go of whatever your holding onto so that both you subconscious and your conscious can move on. Can you edit my KITE RUNNER paragraph? 10 points!!?

My first impressions of the novel the"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini was that is was going to be a very tragic story. Before the audience even knows the protaginist name, we find out that a winder day in 1975 changed his. Right away, I predicted that Amir did something that he still regrets to this day. We find out that he has been trying to forget some secret for 26 years. After Baba's statement, "God help us all if Afghanistan ever falls into hands," I got the feeling that someone of great power was going to take over and control Afghanistan. I got the impression that Amir was jelous of Hassan. I got this impression because of when hassan points out the probelm of the plot of his story. I also got the feeling that Amir picked on Hassan because that was how he could let his anger out. Up to chapter 5 of the novel, Amir doesnt show anger to anyone else, I feel that he only feels comfortable critizing hassan because they are such good frieds. The only part I felt challenging about the novel was all of the characters names. The names sound the same in a way, that part I found a little confusing. I cannot specificall relatate any of my personal experiences to the novel, but however I can relate this novel to the novel NIGHT by Elie Wiesel. So far what I have read about the kite runner is that Amir is struggling with his past. While in the novel the night, Elie is struggling to survive the horrors of the Concentration camps. Both the novels are dealing with someone taking over their country. In the country it seems to me like the Taliban are going to takeover, and in the night it was the Germans who were in control of the Jewish. A question that I was wondering about the novel is why can Baba just accept that his son is not athletic and will not be a spectator? If I was Baba I would feel proud of my son that he was a talented reader and writer, and that sometime he might be a famous author. I also wondered why Amir is afraid to be Hassans true friend, i got the impression it was because he was a servent and didnt want people to think less of him. But i wonder is there more to that? From what I have read so far, i beleive that one of the themes of the novel will be friendship .The characters were well drawn and my heart went out to the trotting-old servant and Hassan. No one is sure of anything, certainly not their safety!

I've had this problem plenty of times, so don't believe there's an easy fix. However, I find what helps is skipping ahead in the plot to write a part that you look forward to, a part you already have figured out and is interesting enough that you really really want to write it. You'll find that the words will flow easier then. You can connect the parts later when you feel more like writing. I gave this answer to someone about a week ago and they found it extremely helpful. Worked for them and for me, so I hope it does for you too!

I'm going to be a junior next school year. I really don't know what I'm going to do after I graduate from high school. I want to do either medical school or business school, but I've always liked culinary. I know going to medical/business school will make A LOT of money, but I'm not really interested in blood, bones, stocks, math, and all that's associated with these two. Is it normal for soccer(football) boots to become difficult to use in rain?

I have the adidas predator x cleats and noticed that in rain, it's very difficult to kick the ball. Almost like the ball keeps slipping and doesn't have any traction on the boot. Maybe if you are a good writer. I had this boss who had written and published 3 books and he still needed to work full time. But who knows, maybe you can, people do it all the time. How to become a Wide Reciever?

I am 5"8 125 lbs and 13 years old I have played tight end in my past pop warner football seasons, mostly because i am good at blocking. But this year Midget Pop Warner I want to play reciever becuase i have good hands and because that is the position I want to play in High School. I am not extremely fast but I am not slow either. They may be using a tactile brush. I had to use one of those because i have tactile hypersensitivity issues and it is suposed to help (I hate it) as to why they would be using it at a nail and massage place for feet (of all places) i have no idea. Seems odd to me.

The advice I could give to you currently and what kinda helps me is to have a notebook dedicated to your story. Then take time to write out your characters, describe them in detail and also do the same with your main events in your story. :) Draw pictures in the notebook of things and people in your story:) Its not to much of helpful advise but this helps me often:)

Predator X's are good from what I learned in my experience with them but I can't fairly compare the three you've listed because other than the Predator X's I've only used the adiZero Primes once as a loaner from one of my mates but I highly recommend the Predators.

I doesn't annoy me but I kind of feel bad for them. The whole point of posting their story on here is to try to get an unbiased opinion but by putting their age and a disclaimer you have already started to influence the reader before they have even begun reading. It is hard to be confident at such a young age but I wish people would take a risk and not worry about something so insignificant.

I read this a couple of times trying to find some redeeming value. It has a message, but it is poorly delivered in the midst of cliches. The only poetic device I could really identify was repetition, and that is ineffective. Your verses lack depth and emotion. There is no imagery, there is nothing that really sparks any interest... You need to wear shin pads, And cleats would be a good idea if you have some. Practice Jumping and kicking. Maybe gets some friends to kick a ball against you. Don't just practice goalie drills though, practice playing soccer as a midfield.

Are you delluded or what, the bible is man-made book written by humans. Has so many mistakes and contradictions. If I was to state them all we would be here for years. Uncle JOE has a jehova version bible, Nan has a english version bible and then next your whole entire family will have a different book to you.. My whole toe nail is falling off!?!?

So, i noticed my softball cleats were getting small on me. I kept telling myself I would get new ones but before I knew it the season was over. I noticed during the season that toe started hurting and then my big toe nail become bruised. I knew it was because of the shoes. Then it started oozing brown stuff (it looked like blood, sorry don't mean to gross anyone out) After that it turned greenish. It started becoming detached slowly. Today it is almost completely off. I could honestly pull on it and then it would detach completely. However, I know a new one will grow back but still. What will my toe look like? How long will it take to grow back? well to start off you may want to use a thesis statement or some type of hook. I think thesis may work best for this type of essay. Some kind of general statement about what your essay is about or a hook that relates.For ex: "Among any group there must be a leader, a person who represents the group and it's ideals. For the _________ highschool color guard, I am willing to step up to be that person." I'm not the best writer but i hope i could help. and avoid using contractions. instead of i'm use i am for example. Also i don't think your coach or whoever runs the color guard will make the decision alone on how well you write. I'm pretty sure they'll pick you based on the all around person and what they've seen in you.

My parents wont let me play football?

so about 5 months back my parents said they would allow me to play football for my high school. today i got all the paper work and now they keep saying they won't let me play! i have football cleats and gloves and the school provides 2 uniforms pads and practice jersey for free (only for the season) but they keep making up different excuses like i'll break my braces so i told them i'll wear a mouth guard then they said i would hurt my legs so i said the school gives out girdles and they kept saying no and i even said i would wear sports goggles to be extra safe! I want to play because my friends are all playing and i haven't played a high school sport yet.i'm already late for the football camp that is $150 so i decided to just do summer weight training for $40 but they keep saying i'll get hurt. I actually have experience with both of these...I own the F50 adizeros in bright orange while my buddy has the Nike's. They're both really good pairs of cleats, it really just depends on what position you play and what you're looking for in cleats. I can vouch for the F50's, especially with the new stuff on top, that they have the best grip on the ball I have ever seen!! It's really helpful since I dribble the ball a lot and have to get around other players. It's also really good for free kicks and bending the ball. However, I'll admit that the Nike's my buddy uses are absolutely amazing with shooting and power. He's a forward (cherry-picker at that haha) and this really helps him get some power on his shot. It's also like the description says-it's good with hard passes and crossing in the air. So if you're a forward or want extra power go with the Nike's, but if you want more ball control definitely go with the F50's. Hope this helped.

So I had an odd dream, the entire dream was odd, not just the part about the banana, but it stands out the most to me. So it was my mother and I, we were sitting with a man and eating a banana.
